Food waste significantly affects greenhouse gas, emissions, which have an impact on climate, fauna, and flora. One of the complexities of suggesting ways to reduce food waste is reaching beyond creating awareness and getting people to change behavior and maintain sustainable routines.

Through research, we found that informing about complex changes and maintaining those routines are quite difficult. We started brainstorming what other alternatives lack at and arrived at scoping our ideas to be implemented within the kitchen. With an increasing focus on Smart Home systems and interconnected devices, we found the kitchen as the ideal place to implement a solution as our focus was preventing food waste. We then conducted an initial user study to get a better understanding of why excess food is thrown out. With these insights in mind, we started sketching ideas and proposals for solutions and built the functional prototype.
A fully functional hardware prototype consisting of a physical and digital part was created. The physical part was made of cardboard, wood, work trestles, and plexiglass to frame a kitchen context. The digital part consisted of a projector, a self-made infrared camera, and a web camera connected to a computer running the software. The digital part was developed to give an overall feeling of the solution in the use context where the touch functionality worked as intended.
